The way to San Francisco from Los Angeles is 381 mile, equal to about 610 kilometers. By the car ride five and a half hours, an hour of which - the traffic and traffic jams. But you can admire the view.
Like any major city in the United States, San Francisco is divided into a set of "Undercity", the most famous here are Palo Alto, Cupertino, San Francisco (the same name), and Mountain View. In Palo Alto, by the way, had lived Steve Jobs.
Essenzhar Kanapin, Bakhytzhan Bayzhikenov and Arman Esenamanov .
– This is our new office. We moved here six months ago. The program itself Imo.im is online instant messenger for mobile phones and tablet gadgets.
In imo about 15 engineers, several designers and recruiters. I'm working on an app for Android, Arman - for iOS, and Baha is working on video chat. Everyone has their own projects, but on completion they change. What are the benefits of our program over the other? This is an opportunity to login and join one imo-account from different social networks and services, including VKontakte and Skype. Sometimes we write new program code, sometimes complement and integrate into existing.
Each week we meet by teams and discuss future plans and goals. It is very important to come at work with a purpose for a day to get results.
Working day from 10 am to 8 pm, two breaks - lunch, dinner. The food always healthy and there is a choice.
Nonstrict work schedule, on the contrary, quite flexible. If you are tired and want to unwind, you can play ping-pong or pool, or hang on the Internet, browse Facebook or YouTube pages. It is important here how you work, not how much.
We live three together nearby, rent an apartment. Rent is not the cheapest.
Here we miss kazy (is a traditional sausage-like food from horse meat - Translator’s Note), and to bring difficultly - at the airports from bags often pull out. In California, in my opinion, in general it is forbidden to kill horses for food.
Sports programming - a competition where teams have a limited time (3-5 hours) on the solve and knowledge of the algorithmic tasks and data structures. That command which will solve faster and more tasks wins.
Arman has asked not to photograph his workplace, but has allowed making a picture of the keyboard. On it names of keys are erased to know a keyboard apportion by heart.
The story itself how exactly we ended up in imo is quite interesting. After our performance in Orlando on my e-mail I received a letter from recruiters of imo. I just didn’t believe to the contents of the letter, for me it seemed unreal, but nevertheless I answered them and asked for more information. They explained everything and said that will pay travel and visa costs. Eessen with Baha also attached, sent their resumes.
– Unlike Arman and Essen I studied in KBTU to be a financier (Bakhytzhan has already participated in the Vox Populi reportage Vox Populi, dedicated to this institution. – Ed.Note). However at school participated in the Competitions in Informatics. In university took generally that I well programmed.
In imo I work over a video chat. I had to start from scratch, so long as it is in the process of modifications.
The language barrier, oddly enough, was not a special challenge. Most likely due to the fact that the main terms in KBTU we studied in English and then could safely use them here in the conversation. And in general, basically programming is written in English.
Nobody is bother, if you at the workplace visit Facebook or YouTube, just occasionally talk to you and help to make the process of work more interesting. I have had days when I did not do anything, but this is rare.
We will work here until August, and then we'll see. We have no plans to stay here, still want to go home. In Kazakhstan, you can run your project, but it is not as easy as it seems.
CEO of the Company Ralph speaks about guys like this: «You know what, these guys are awesome».
The meeting was due to start at 17.45 pm, but we were late and arrived at 18.45. . To get inside all the same it was possible. Asset Isekeshev himself came here with his team, in order to make contact with the Silicon Valley for further cooperation and development technological industry in Kazakhstan.
There I met with a few of our guys who wanted to take part in the report, they work in Twitter, Comity Designs and Groupon. The guy from Google, unfortunately, refused. And here in the famous Facebook anybody from Kazakhstan, as I was told, does not work.
Arman Suleimenov and Slava Kim, collections.me.
– I work for a company collections.me. This is a young start-up, we are less than a year. The company is the answer to the question - how Finder looked like(File Manager, which is installed by default on all MacOS ) , if it was built not in 1983, and today.
Now most of our files are no longer stored on the hard disk, they are scattered across dozens of services. We are trying to gather all in one pile, in the collection, in collections.me.
There are a huge number of start-ups, in which students work for 18-20 hours a day, almost no sleep and all the time programmed. We think that this is not the correct approach. If it already seven in the evening, we have no sense of guilt if someone gets up and goes to rest, meet friends and so on. Need to recharge the batteries.
To be effective we need clarity. That is why at the beginning of the day each of us says what he/she will do and what the purpose put.
Hacker House - it's just a name. It means that people work at home, and as they have on the table a lot of monitors and laptops, it looks very-hacker, hence the Hacker House.
– I went to school № 17 in Astana, after the school I’ve studied one year at the branch of Moscow State University. Then I had the opportunity to study in the U.S. on a scholarship "Bolashak". Later I graduated from Purdue University in Indiana, and then entered to Princeton to get a master's degree. In both higher educational institutions I studied computer science.
I am going to come back in Kazakhstan in the end of summer, but the return-ticket while I haven’t, so things could change. I'm sure, a lot of interesting projects waiting for me there.
– At the very beginning when I came to the States I went to work in a startup too where worked 20 people. It was not interesting and it seemed that I wasting my time for nothing.
Four years I come forward on competitions, traveled around the country, tried to decide whether to do it further. Our team won two national competitions. I met so many people, including Baha, Essen and Arman. They introduced me to Arman Suleimenov, who later invited me to work in collections.me, and I agreed without hesitation.
In the previous company my work and my actions influenced an end-product very little, there and then I see an essential difference because much depends on me. It gives rise to responsibility and gives feeling of pleasure by work.
Rent of such house with expenses on utilities - about $7000 a month. We live three together, and still there is a pair people which rent separate rooms.
We have no Americans in our team, so we do not eat fast food. Usually Tony cooks, because he has the most experience. And a dinner to us brings to the house.
Actually to start the company is now easier, than earlier. First, thanks to the Internet and the information which can be received not leaving the house. And secondly, if it was necessary to buy servers earlier, to establish certain temperature in a room that they correctly functioned, etc., now it is service which can be bought on the Internet, and it cost cheaply. Amazon and GoDaddy give these services for some hundred dollars a year.
I don’t know yet if I want to stay here or go home. To get started, I want to enter the university here and get education and after that to make such important decisions.
At the moment my team and I are working on an application for an operating system Android, which has long been out, but is in the process of constant improvement and upgrading. I transferred to the team Mobile - Android a month ago at will, because she wanted to try something new. Prior to that, more than a year I worked in the team by personalizing of "Groupons".
I was studied on a specialty of the engineer-programmer in Almaty at university of Sulejman Demirel, I had a choice between the finance and programming.
In total I work here one and a half year, I madly like projects which we develop, and the most important thing, people who here surround me. In this room it is possible to have a rest and read the book after several hours of work.
In our company is also very important not how much you work, and whether you perform a task assigned to you. I try to come at 9 am and leave at 17:30, and at lunch time I go to yoga. It helps me to focus and collect his thoughts in a heap.
I never submitted the resume (CV) to such companies as Twitter or Facebook, but in Google tried two times. In second time it seemed, that all has passed irreproachably, they have demanded hardly more than interesting projects in the resume. Things come in threes - I will try once again!
Although I am far away from home I always in touch with the local people of Kazakhstan, attend local meetings and events. On the March 16th in Berkeley was celebrated Nowruz, which brought together all the local Kazakhs. The event was organized by the cultural center of the Silk Road House, whose president is Professor of Stanford University Alma Kunanbayeva. At this event, I played several kyuis on dombra. Now, I attend courses of Azerbaijani music at Stanford University. I do not want to forget my skills of playing the dombra, maybe there is teacher ready to teach me on Skype?
– I am from Almaty. Studied at the KBTU, after graduation also a year worked in Kazakhstan, while friends were not invited to the States. The opportunity to get a lot of experience and knowledge intrigued me. Arrived in the U.S. in 2009.
At school programming was interesting, but I studied in an ordinary school number 9. Our teacher in computer science had not a responsible approach to business. All we did was drawing (as she pronounced) in the “pʌint” (paint) or retyped text with two fingers.
I have started to be trained in programming only on the first course, on a specialty computerization, and Shamil - the programmer. For that moment it especially differed nothing, and we took the same subjects and very often sat in the same classes. Although, in fact, my specialty is more related to programming equipment, not writing. I was struck by how cool that you can write a program, and the machine will fulfill it. It's an art in some way.
It is very interesting that the person engaging in such a cushy job can create something for people, simplify their lives and at the same time earn a substantial amount. But I do not say that it is easy.
Work schedule is quite flexible, it is advisable to work in the office, so it's easier and can solve problems together. However, this is not a rule, but rather instruction that facilitates the work process. In the photo is our reward for third place in the championship Hackaton. This is a championship where we had to come up with an idea and implement it. Two days we spent on the brain-storming and two more days for coding. In the end we took third place.
Our company works with East coast, they are ahead of us on 3 hours and consequently when we have a lunch break, at them there is 03.00-04.00 pm, the end of day and the negotiations are carries out. And because of it very often it is necessary to eat in front of the computer.
I try to come to work at 9:00 am and leave at 17:30, but it is very flexible. I live together with my friends Vanya and Volodya, they are also programmers, we studied together at KBTU. We rent an apartment nearby, it costs for us $ 1,800 with utilities. The first thing that surprised me in America, it is the presence of two bins. Initially I threw the food debris in both buckets at a time. Later I was told that one of the buckets is for recyclable waste. Food at home, in my opinion, is better. At least, American products seem to me artificial. At home parents have always helped me, even against my will. In America, you need to cook yourself and all simple cases related to clothing and cleaning, you must do yourself as well. . However, devices and the services accessible in America, facilitate housekeeping. For example, in Kazakhstan, not everyone has a dishwasher. In the homeland at leisure I met friends, we went to the cinema, gathered in cafe, played "Mafia". Sometimes went on the picnics. In America we do the same. Still sometimes we lease the car and we go in other cities. Quite often we visit the amusement parks.
– Came to the U.S. in 2006. Together with a group of students from KBTU I began to study at local university NPU in Fremont for Programme of bilateral exchange. It is interestingly that we have arrived in the United States, but in Kazakhstan from America no one went.
With friends, we have studied here a year, had to go back to the fifth course, but came back to Kazakhstan only three of us. I stayed and graduated Bachelor for one year. In total there were 3 semester, including summer. I graduated KBTU remotely.
Practice in company Visio which already does not exist has begun. We together with my friend Olzhas Makhambetov practiced in this company, worked effectively and received a lot of experience, but very often asked for leave from work and came late. At one moment it has bothered the chief. The case when he has given us the task for performance and we have promised that we will finish it after the final became the last drop. After final we have gone to Santa Cruz to have a rest, walked on a beach and played beach volleyball, and we have forgotten about the task. Next day Olzhas spoke with the chief in chat and has asked him that we have handed over the task next day, but he, probably, was in bad mood and has dismissed both him and me through a chat. (Shamil laughs. – Comm. Aut.).
After a while I was accepted already on a permanent job in the Comity Designs Company, there works also Gaziz Tazhenov, with him we studied at KBTU, and on July 1, 2012 I moved to Twitter. They were looking for a specialist in a narrow field, namely in salesforce.com. Already nine months I work in this large company.
In Twitter I do not work on the product itself and on the engine, which sells advertising. There's quite a complex algorithm, targeting to advertising is shown to each user depending on his/her interests. From the side Twitter looks simple, but in reality it is a huge collection of systems and subsystems that work together to provide this unique service.
Heroes of reportage wish all the creative and career successes and achieve their goals, and the report's author is grateful to all the heroes, as well as special thanks to Andrey Milyaev for help.
